Can Milan wait for icon to deliver?

Is Ronaldinho finally about to deliver? When the Brazilian ace was formally "presented" to the AC Milan faithful last year, he was greeted at the San Siro like some sort of all-conquering hero, wooed by pulsating samba rhythms, a firework display and a 30,000-strong crowd.

Eighteen months later, those same Milan fans might be entitled to ask themselves if he was worth all the fuss. Even no less a figure than Pier Silvio Berlusconi -- son of the prime minister and the club's owner, Silvio Berlusconi -- recently criticized the club's estimated $26 million purchase of Ronaldinho from Barcelona.

"If it had been up to me, I would have gone down another, more long-term road rather than buying a player for the immediate short term," Berlusconi junior told reporters during a TV business fair in Monte Carlo in November, in reference to "Il Dentone" (the big, toothy one).

When Brazil coach Dunga left Ronaldinho out of the squad for the World Cup qualifiers last autumn, there were those willing to speculate this was the end of the international road for him.

Unconfirmed sources told us that a dejected "Dinho" was even thinking of chucking it all in. He had had enough. Dunga, meanwhile, merely urged people to leave the player alone and allow him to regain his best form.

Which, curiously, is what he appears to have done at the end of 2009, when there were tantalizing indications that perhaps, just perhaps, the former World Player of the Year might still be capable of getting back up there. As Milan has switched to a more attacking lineup (Alexandre Pato-Clarence Seedorf-Ronaldinho playing behind Marco Borriello), Ronaldinho has come up with a variety of glorious assists for either compatriot Pato or Borriello.

Even on a disappointing night which saw Milan held 1-1 in the Champions League by Marseille, Ronaldinho was arguably the best news of the game for Milan. As the former European champions struggled to contain a determined Marseille in the second half, Ronaldinho was noticeable not only for the quality of his play but also, unusually for him, for the enthusiasm with which he covered and chased back. At one point, he was seen excitedly urging the San Siro faithful to get behind the team.

If owner Berlusconi had written the script, that is how it would have gone. As far as the powers that be at Milan are concerned, this just has to be Ronaldinho's season. Last summer, of course, he may well have served as a pawn in the chess war of never-ending rivalry that underlines all relations between Milan and city cousins Internazionale. He tended to look like Milan's answer to the bold move which a month earlier had seen Inter hire the "Special One," former Porto and Chelsea coach José Mourinho.

Now, in this post-Kaká, post-Paolo Maldini, post-Carlo Ancelotti campaign, Milan badly needs "Dinho" to do the business out there on the pitch rather than on the transfer market. Media tycoon Berlusconi has always been a huge fan, believing that Ronaldinho can write new chapters in Milan's history by reproducing the sort of form which saw him win the World Soccer World Player of the Year, FIFA Player of Year and European Player of the Year awards, not to mention the Champions League title, during his five seasons (2003 to '08) with Barça.

By the end of last season, beset by a series of niggling injuries and regularly consigned to the bench by Ancelotti, there was little sign of such a revival for Ronaldinho. The season had begun well with him picking the best possible match to score his first Serie A goal for Milan: namely, a winning header against Inter in the first derby of last season. But that perfect start proved to be a mirage and, to a large extent, it was all downhill from then on.

It may well be that the change of coach at Milan has proved beneficial for Ronaldinho. When he says that it is easy to work with the new man in charge -- compatriot Leonardo -- one tends to believe him, if for nothing else because the two men speak the same language: both literally and also in terms of their football philosophies. There seems little doubt, too, that Leonardo has put his own neck on the line by investing in a Ronaldinho revival -- something that may just be beginning to pay a dividend.

"I find it really difficult to be stuck on the bench," says Ronaldinho. "I'm glad only when I get a chance to do the thing I like best -- to play. I was unhappy, but now, I'm enjoying my football again."

Some Milanello observers also point to his more professional lifestyle. In other words, these days, Ronaldinho spends much more time on the training pitch than on the dance floor.

Those observations may be a trifle unkind, but it was significant to hear an old Milan warrior like Franco Baresi recently highlight Ronaldinho as the key figure in an overall Milan seasonal watershed: "Milan's seasonal start was not easy but the team looks to me to have refound morale, enthusiasm and self-belief, starting with Ronaldinho," Baresi observed.

Manchester City, greatest in the world?

An ill-advised soccer boast was made recently in a New York bar by the chief executive of newly rich club Manchester City. Merrily counting entire farms of chickens before they hatch, Garry Cook didn't even look like he'd been drinking.

"This football club is going to be, without doubt, the biggest and the best football club in the world,'' Cook declared to a gathering of City fans who seemingly had enough to drink that they cheered as if they actually believed every word.

"I'll make no excuses for saying it.''

Given how Manchester United put its noisy neighbor back in its place this week, in one of the most dramatic matches this season will deliver, Cook must be feeling sorry now.

Ultimately, all Cook proved is that the only cheap thing left in soccer these days is talk.

Dethroning institutions - because that is what they are - such as United, Real Madrid, AC Milan or Barcelona is going to be far, far more expensive than what's been spent to date. Possibly too costly even for the deep wells of Abu Dhabi oil money being drained to refloat City, write off its debts and give the club's long suffering fans something they've dared not harbor for years: hope.

The bill so far: nearly $630 million.

What Cook clearly hasn't grasped is that knocking the Reds off their perch, as United's Alex Ferguson himself once famously said of his ambition to humble Liverpool, will take more than a fat book of those outsized cardboard checks that are handed to grinning lottery winners. Buying consistent year-in, year-out success isn't as simple as taking a trip to the supermarket.

City is sixth in the Premier League ahead of this Sunday's game against bottom-dwellers Portsmouth, 13 points behind leader Chelsea but tantalizingly close to a qualifying spot for the Champions League next season. Not bad, but could do better.

It will take years for City to construct anything even close to the legacy and cluttered trophy cabinet that Ferguson has given United in 24 seasons in charge. It may never happen.

It will take time, maybe years, for City to cultivate the winning mentality that Ferguson has built into a habit. Not by chance over the decades have his teams been masters of scoring late winning goals. Under Ferguson, they have learned not to give up as the clock ticks down.

Remember Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solksjaer's stoppage-time strikes that won the Champions League in 1999? This season, Michael Owen came off the bench to score 6 minutes beyond regulation for a 4-3 triumph in September, and Wayne Rooney put United into the final of the League Cup with a stoppage time header in a fevered Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Both of those wins came against - who else? - Manchester City.

So much for Cook's silly New York talk of beating United "yet again.''

"You like to win your derby games,'' Ferguson said after Wednesday's 3-1 victory. "The fact that we scored so late in the game brought a special type of celebration.''

What Ferguson is playing down, however, is that City is a long-term concern. And rightly so.

The financing by Abu Dhabi royal family member Sheikh Mansour gives City spending power that United, deep in debt, is struggling to match. One reason Ferguson says he has not spent heavily this season is because he feels that player prices are too high - inflation City surely didn't help by paying a British-record fee for forward Robinho and handsomely for the likes of Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure.

The challenge mounted by the cross-city pretenders also means United has yet another front to fight on. One front too many? Ideally, Ferguson might have liked to rest stars like Rooney, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes on Wednesday to keep them fresh for the Premier League match against Arsenal this weekend. Instead, with so much rivalry and pride on the line, they all played for the full 90 minutes.

Although the final result was evidence that Manchester's soccer hierarchy remains intact, Ferguson's team selection showed how seriously he takes the City threat.

Should Arsenal win this Sunday because United is short on juice, and should that defeat help ensure that Chelsea wins the Premier League this season, then at least City will have the modest consolation of knowing that, in its own small way, it contributed to the champions' downfall.

Robinho in loan deal to Santos

The Club can confirm that it has reached agreement with Santos for Robinho to join them on a six-month loan. The agreement takes immediate effect and ends on August 4.
Santos will assume all of the player's contract terms, including wages and bonuses. Robinho will travel to Brazil on Sunday to begin his loan period.

Manager Roberto Mancini said: "Robinho is someone who needs to be playing regularly and we wish him well for the period of his loan."

Robinho joined City on the final day of the transfer window of summer 2008 for a British record fee of £32.5m from Real Madrid.

He signed on the first day of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed's ownership and enjoyed a fine season, ending the campaign as top scorer with 15 goals, including a hat-trick against Stoke.

Robinho, who left Santos for Real Madrid in 2005, is first choice for Brazil, with whom he won the Confederations Cup last summer, but fears a lack of match action will jeopardise his place.

Inter Milan to beat Juventus 2-1 in the Italian Cup

MILAN (AP) -- None other than Mario Balotelli scored the 89th-minute winner for Inter Milan to beat Juventus 2-1 in the Italian Cup quarterfinals on Thursday.

Juve fans were banned from attending the game at the San Siro specifically due to racial taunts directed at Balotelli, who was of Ghanaian descent.

The game may have been the last for Juventus coach Ciro Ferrara, with the Turin club struggling mightily in Serie A and also eliminated from the Champions League.

It was Juve's ninth loss in its last 12 games in all competitions.

Balotelli knocked in a rebound of a shot from Thiago Motta.

Diego put Juventus in front 10 minutes in with the help of an error by Inter goalkeeper Francesco Toldo, who let the ball pass through his legs. Inter defender Lucio equalized in the 72nd, deflecting in a free kick from Wesley Sneijder.

"In the second half we took advantage of the fact that we're going through a good moment and they're not," Inter manager Jose Mourinho said. "We never lost hope."

Juventus defender and Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro was given a yellow card for unsportsmanlike behavior following Balotelli's winner.

Inter will face Fiorentina in the two-leg semifinals on Feb. 3 and 10, while AS Roma plays Udinese in the other half of the draw.

Mourinho defended Ferrara amid calls for his ouster.

"We're men, we have families and it's not nice what is happening, that they're talking about (Rafa) Benitez, or (Alberto) Zaccheroni," Mourinho said. "Ferrara deserves respect. Unfortunately Ferrara is going through a period when nobody respects him, but I respect him."

Inter nearly equalized immediately after Diego's score, but a powerful effort from Balotelli was pushed wide by Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

Playing in place of usual starter Julio Cesar, Toldo again had trouble stopping a shot from Diego in the 17th, needing two tries to pick up the ball.

In the 20th, Inter forward Goran Pandev set up Maicon but he couldn't find the target.

Italy left back Fabio Grosso nearly made it 2-0 for Juve in the 37th, with Toldo forced to push a long shot wide.

Inter then thought it had a case for a penalty, but a handball by Felipe Melo inside the area was ruled involuntary, infuriating Mourinho as the squads walked off for halftime.

"It's better to forget what happened at the end of the first half," Mourinho said.

In the 55th, Diego provided a cross for Giorgio Chiellini and the defender's header skimmed the outside of the post.

Inter took off midfielder Esteban Cambiasso in the 61st and put on a third forward, Diego Milito, setting up a full-on assault from the Serie A leader.

Atletico tops Celta to advance in Copa; Getafe, too

MADRID (AP) -- Atletico Madrid beat second-division Celta Vigo 1-0 to reach the Copa del Rey semifinals on Thursday, when Getafe also advanced despite losing to Mallorca 1-0.

Diego Forlan stole the ball away from defender Francisco Noguerol in the 26th minute before speeding in on goal to tuck a low shot past goalkeeper Yoel Rodriguez to put Atletico through 2-1 on aggregate after two legs.

Celta had its chances, with Roberto Trashorras' free kick saved by 'keeper David De Gea moments, while Jose Luis Mato headed off the crossbar in the 84th before turning another chance wide in injury time.

Atletico will face Racing Santander, which beat Osasuna 3-0 on Wednesday to advance 5-1 overall.

Earlier, Getafe advanced to its third semifinal in four years on away goals after their series' finished 2-2 on aggregate.

Aritz Aduritz made up for an earlier penalty miss with a headed goal in the 45th minute to even the series, but Getafe's two away goals from the first leg were enough.

Getafe will play Sevilla in a rematch of the 2007 final, which Sevilla won.

Getafe goalkeeper Oscar Ustari stopped Aduritz's penalty on the half hour but couldn't stop the Basque striker's header two minutes into first-half stoppage time as he got high over his marker to turn in the corner kick.

Egypt, Ghana into African Cup final

BENGUELA, Angola (AP) -- Egypt will defend its African Cup of Nations title in the final against Ghana after thrashing fierce rival Algeria 4-0 in a testy semifinal on Thursday.

Ghana eliminated Nigeria 1-0 in the other semifinal at Luanda to reach its first African final in 18 years.

Egypt will carry an 18-match unbeaten streak in the African Cup into Sunday's final in Luanda. There, the tournament's most successful team will try to win a third successive African final and a seventh overall.

"This is a special win," Egypt captain Ahmed Hassan said. "We all wanted a win but we didn't expect to win by four goals."

Ghana won the last of its four titles in 1982.

"It's unbelievable," Ghana scorer Asamoah Gyan said. "We are a young team and not many people gave us a chance of making the final."

Algeria was the last team to beat Egypt in the African Cup, in 2004 at Tunisia, and had never lost to Egypt in the tournament.

But Algeria's problems began when Rafik Halliche was sent off for his second yellow card in the 36th minute, and Hosni Abd Rabou scored from the penalty spot. Two more Algerians would be red-carded in the second half as Egypt would add three more goals in an unexpected rout.

Mohamed Zidan's 15-yard shot doubled Egypt's advantage in the 65th, then Nadir Belhadj was ejected, reducing Algeria to nine.

Substitute Mohamed Abdel Shafy made it 3-0 followed soon after by the forced exit of Algeria goalkeeper Faouzi Chaouchi.

"The level of refereeing in Africa is still very poor," Algeria and Rangers defender Madjid Bougherra said. "We will be going to the World Cup. We will get enough time to improve."

Replacement Mohamed Gedo capped Egypt's first tournament win over Algeria with a last score in injury time and his Cup-leading fourth goal.

Gyan, Mali's Seydou Keita, Angola's Flavio and Egypt's Hassan have scored three each.

Gyan's lone goal eliminated host Angola in the quarterfinals, and his 21st-minute header, assisted by Kwadwo Asamoah, sealed Ghana's win over Nigeria.

Nigeria, which dominated possession, created chances after Gyan's goal but Ghana responded with solid defense.

"I had told my players that we were going to play to reach the final and not to produce beautiful football," Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac said. "Only the result matters. It's all about the result."

Ghana's Opoku Agyemang left the field in the 32nd with a leg injury, dealing a blow to a team which excelled without its core players including Michael Essien and Stephen Appiah.

"We didn't lose to a better side, but to a youthful and enterprising team," said Nigeria coach Shuaibu Amodu. "We were better and we paid for not making the most of our chances."

Nigeria and Algeria will meet in the third-place playoff on Saturday at Benguela.
